What can I do by the time I am discharged?

By the time you are discharged, you will be able to:

  • walk short distances

  • climb a flight of stairs

  • shower without supervision, and

  • prepare light meals (assuming you were able to do these things prior to coming to the hospital)

Prior to discharge, you will receive a physiotherapy program, a script for any new medication, a discharge plan regarding rehabilitation or home care (if necessary), and discharge instructions. If for some reason, you are not discharged on Day 4 or 5 after your surgery, you will be encouraged daily to carry on with your exercise program, continue to eat a healthy diet, and try to rest as much as possible. We ask you to have someone available to help you at home for a week after you are discharged. If you live alone, have special needs, or do not have a companion or family member to attend closely to you for a few days after you return home, please notify the staff and ask to see the Discharge Planning Coordinator.
